------------------ psychlotron.org.uk ------------------ Name of resource: Piaget & egocentrism Author(s): Aidan Sammons Specification: AQA-B Details: Slides & a handout on pre-operational thinking, with the main emphasis on egocentrism. I teach this lesson with a main 'jigsaw' activity: Divide students into groups of three and assign each member of each group a number (1, 2 or 3). In the classroom are three areas, each corresponding to one of the three tests of egocentrism referred to. In the classroom are three areas, each containing a set of materials for carrying out each test and a written description of each test and its results. According to their number, students gather in one of these areas where they have the task of (1) making sure they understand how the test is done (e.g. by role-playing using the descriptions and materials) (2) noting the key results and (3) critically discussing the test in terms of its validity. Students then return to their groups of three, each member of the group having learned about a different test. They must then (1) share what they have learned and (2) make critical comparisons between the three tests. Guidance questions are on the slides. Page one of the handout has information about the three tests. The following three pages each have the same information in larger print, one test per page, for use as a learning resource in the main activity.
